Understanding Wisdom Teeth Extraction
What does extraction involve?
What does the procedure involve?
Initially, you'll receive anesthesia to numb the area. Some dentists may also offer nitrous oxide for relaxation or sedation.
If your wisdom teeth are straight, extraction is straightforward and done with dental tools by a dentist. For impacted teeth, oral surgery is needed. The gum tissue covering the tooth is cut open, and if necessary, muscle or bone is also removed. The tooth may be extracted whole or in pieces if needed.
After removal, the area is cleaned, the gum tissue is stitched back, and gauze is placed to control bleeding.
What are the aftercare steps following wisdom teeth extraction?
Immediately after wisdom teeth extraction, you'll stay at the dentist's office until the anesthesia wears off. You'll be monitored to ensure bleeding is under control with gauze. Once stable, arrange for someone to drive you home.
At Somerset Family Dentistry, we advise preparing for recovery by resting with elevated pillows and keeping essentials like water, gauze, ibuprofen, and entertainment nearby. Stick to soft foods like popsicles, ice cream, and soup for the first 48 hours to ease soreness.
To reduce swelling, apply ice in 15-minute intervals and take ibuprofen as directed for 24 to 48 hours. Transition to solid foods gradually, avoiding crunchy or hard items that may irritate healing gums. Full recovery typically takes up to two weeks.
Schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist to monitor healing and receive clearance for resuming normal eating habits.
