About Teeth Whitening
How Does A Teeth Whitening Procedure Work?
Whitening products generally fall into two categories: those containing peroxide-based bleaching agents and whitening toothpastes or dentifrices. Among peroxide-based bleaching agents, the active ingredients commonly used are carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.
The concentration of these ingredients plays a crucial role in determining the strength, effectiveness, and safety of the whitening system. These systems function by initiating a chemical reaction between the bleaching agent and the molecules responsible for discoloration, thereby breaking up and eliminating stains and discoloration from the teeth.
Considerations In Care
At Somerset Family Dentistry, we excel in blending dental expertise with artistic precision to craft beautiful, healthy smiles. We recognize the significance of your investment in dental care and are dedicated to offering treatments that promote excellent oral health while fulfilling your smile aspirations. Our practice provides a range of advanced cosmetic dental services, and our team is committed to guiding you toward the optimal choice for your individual smile.
While teeth whitening procedures can deliver impressive outcomes, it's important to understand that not all types of stains or discoloration respond equally to this treatment. Teeth whitening exclusively targets natural tooth enamel and does not alter the color of dental fillings, crowns, or bridges. Those with yellow-toned teeth typically see more noticeable improvements, whereas individuals with brown or grayish teeth may require more tailored whitening approaches or alternative cosmetic solutions. Moreover, teeth whitening may not be suitable for individuals with sensitive teeth, worn enamel, or significant gum issues.
Rest assured, our team will conduct a thorough assessment of your smile and provide expert advice on whether teeth whitening aligns with your needs. Should it not be the ideal option, we will recommend alternative cosmetic procedures that ensure healthier and more effective results.
What To Do And What To Expect After A Teeth Whitening Procedure
- Watch what you eat and drink immediately after an in-office treatment. It takes about 48 hours for the protective layer of your teeth to fully reestablish itself. During this time, avoid consuming deeply colored foods and beverages that can stain your teeth. Examples include coffee, red wine, dark soft drinks, teas, berries, grapes, chocolate, and other dark-colored foods.
- Quit smoking or refrain from smoking for at least a couple of days after whitening. Smoking stains and yellows teeth, and reducing or quitting altogether not only enhances your smile's appearance but also benefits your overall oral health and well-being.
- Some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures is normal for a few days following the procedure. This discomfort typically diminishes over time. You can manage it with over-the-counter pain medication and sensitive teeth toothpaste.
- Understand that the results of teeth whitening can vary based on factors like your teeth's original shade, diet, and oral habits. Importantly, whitening procedures do not alter the color of existing fillings, crowns, bridges, or dental bonding. If this concerns you, we can discuss options for replacing these restorations.
- Maintain your whitening results by practicing good oral hygiene and attending regular dental check-ups. We can also provide a take-home whitening system for occasional touch-ups as needed.
